PowToon

This term my class learnt how to use the website PowToon and then we had to make a PowToon individually. It was a book report based on our serial story called "Twist of Gold".

A PowToon is an animated slideshow that you create and set up the timing of the slides. It has props, cool music and nice backgrounds. When you push play the slides come up as a short movie.

I really enjoyed the book and I loved making the PowToon. I hope you enjoy my PowToon.

Rad Rhythm

On Monday 29th October Jonny from Rad Rhythm in Wellington came to Hoon Hay School. He came to our school because last year Hoon Hay won a competition for him to come and visit us.

We all had to go to the hall and sit quietly. Jonny talked to us about how he started playing music. He also talked to us about a teacher who gave him a pair of drumsticks and it changed his life. We then did some competitions like dancing to different genres on the drums and tricks with drumsticks. It was a lot of fun.

He said always dream big, work hard and always help others.

We then had our own time with Jonny in room 9, we got put into groups and we had to make our own Rad Rhythm piece.

Each group got a different piece of equipment to use. Our group were given shoes!

We sounded ok, but not as good as the groups that came first with cups and bamboo sticks. We had a great time.

Athletics

This term we did athletics the first and the second week back at school. We did some training in term three for this.

There were six sports that we trained for: they were long distance, sprints, high jump and long jump. The year fives did not have to do shot put and discus because Sport Canterbury changed the rules.

My favourite one would be long distance because that's what I'm good at and I always get a placing in the top three.

On Thursday in week one the year fives did high jump and long jump. The girls did high jump first and the boys did long jump first. On Tuesday morning we had sprints, long distance and relays.

It was starting to get really hot when long distance was on.
I started out in third but then I got in front of the second placed girl on the first lap and then I over took the first place girl on the second lap and came in first place.

We then did sprints I placed fourth in fifty metres and third in eighty metre heats. I was also in the relay team for Cracroft, we got third.

At the prize giving I got a first place ribbon I was very happy.

AVAILLL

This term my class has been doing AVAILLL. AVAILLL is when the whole class watches a movie and then during the movie we do activities.  The movie is in subtitles.
AVAILLL stands for Audio Visual Achievement In Literacy Language and Learning.

Some of the activities are Word Hunt which you have to find the longest word when it is paused and you have to try make little words out of it.

Another activity is Synonym Search and you get a bit of paper and it has some words on it so when the movie is paused you have to find the word that means the same on the subtitle.

One more activity is the Last Word I think that this one would be the hardest because you have to look at the subtitles all the time just in case the teacher stops it not on the subtitles.

The movies that we have watched so far are Epic, The Neverending story, A Series of Unfortunate Events and Dolphin Tale.

My favourite movie was Dolphin Tale!

Makey Makey

This term my teacher introduced Makey Makey to my class.

Makey Makey is turning everyday objects into touch pads using our Chromebook, power board and electrical currents.

We did lots of interesting experiments.
The first we tried was using bits of fruit to make piano sounds. To do this we had to connect 7 of the 8 wires from the main power board to the fruit. We had to have one cord spare at all times to connect to the Earth which was at the bottom of the power board. If it was not connected to Earth it won't work even if you tried your hardest.

We also used scissors to play the game  Pacman and pencil and paper to play Mario jump.

My favourite was using a pencil to draw an up,down, left & right arrow on a piece of paper. We then connected the 4 colour wires from the board to the paper making sure that we had the right colours matching otherwise it wouldn't work as well.

Production (Egypt)

This term our school did a production and it was called "The Journey". If you do't know what a production is it is when every class does an item to show at night and we do it every second year. Each class gots a different country and my class got Egypt.

We had six mummies, eleven pharaohs, six Cleopatras, one king and two cats. In my school there is nineteen classes so the show would take about an hour including the finale. So I better stop and show you some pictures.

This is the class photo when we were all dressed up. The costumes were very comfortable but maybe not for the mummies.

Here are the Cleopatras, I thought that out of all the characters these people were the best.

I thought that the production went really well, if it was a competition, my class would of won!

Spelling

This term we have been doing spelling when the bell rings in the morning. Some of the different ways we do is staircase, fancy writing five times and putting the words into a compound and a complex sentence. For example if my word was glared and I did the staircase writing it would look like this.
g
gl
gla
glar
glare
glared

If I did it in fancy writing I would do it like this.
GLARED
GLARED
GLARED
GLARED
GLARED

If I did a complex sentence and my word was glared it will look like this.

I was eating dinner while my brother glared at me and made himself hungry.

If I did a compound sentence it will look like this.

I glared at someone's ice cream and I really wanted to eat it.

What are some ways you practise your spelling words?

Problem Solving

This term our class has been doing more Problem Solving. We were learning how to solve multiplication problems by using different strategies.

On Thursday we used an app on the iPad called Explain Everything. This app is an interactive whiteboard that allows us to collaborate, write, record and share our maths thinking.

My maths mate and I decided to share how we solved the following multiplication problem. We used the strategy/strategies of multiplication and addition.

We hope you enjoy our maths tutorial.

Please comment below if you learnt something new from our video.

My camp experience

Straight after the April holidays, from Wednesday 2nd May to Friday 4th of May, I went on camp to Spencer Park with the Year 5s from my class and Room 20. Some of the things we did were orienteering, forest survivor, saving the sand dunes and we went to Adrenalin Forest. My highlight from camp was orienteering.

Here are my two pieces of writing about my time at camp. I hope you enjoy them

Camp Challenge

I heard
The carabiners clipping onto the rope and Wally the dog barking.

I heard
My pulley getting louder and louder as I went down the zip-line.

I saw
Other people going really fast on the zip-line.

I felt
The rope hurting my hands on most of the activities.

I felt
My fingers getting numb while I was pulling myself across the rope.

I wondered
If I could start Level Two.

I wondered
If it would rain while I was in the middle of an activity.

Camp Remember When...
Remember when....I tripped up in orienteering before we even got to our first marker.

Remember when...everyone was on the bouncy pillow at the same time and pushing each other so the teacher came over and told us not too.

That was my 2018 camp to Spencer Park.

Remember when...we played human battleships although my team didn’t win the first round, I got put in a different team and we won all the games.

Remember when...we had to hunt for lollipops around the lodge so that we could all have a tiny treat.

That was my 2018 camp to Spencer Park.

Remember when...I got stuck at Adrenalin Forest in the zipline because I kept my hands on the rope.

Do you Remember when...we were on the bus while we played some games altogether.

That was my 2018 camp to Spencer park.

Storybird Poetry Anthology

This term Jackson’s Studio has been writing lots of different poems. Over the last week we have been publishing our poems on a website called Storybird. On Storybird we turned our poems into a book called Poetry Anthology, because an anthology is a collection of poem.

Here is my book which my haiku, diamante, cinquain, acrostic, my James K Baxter inspired poem and two sense poems. Can you guess which poem is which?

Chapter Chat - There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom

This term we have been part of Chapter Chat, a twitter based book chat. We have read a book called ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom’ which is about two boys a good one Jeff and a bad one Bradley. Jeff walked into a girls' bathroom on accident, when he was going to a counsellor called Carla.

Every Friday we went on Twitter with other schools in New Zealand that are also part of Chapter Chat. When we are on Twitter we answered questions in small groups about what we had read in the last week. Each week we also had to complete at least one quality Chapter Chat activity to share on Twitter.

This is one of my activities where I had to design a t-shirt for Carla. I made it by just drawing a normal t-shirt and colouring it in different colours and shapes.

This is my second activity where I had to create a gold star for Bradley. It was hard because I had no idea how to draw one.

Thi
s is my third activity where I had to draw what Bradley would look like if he was a monster. I made it in 10 minutes with pens in a box so I had no idea what colours
I was using.

What one was your favourite?

My favourite one was the t-shirt because it was really fun to make and and it took me a long time which was worth it.

Haiku Poem

In Jackson's Studio, as part of our poetry unit for writing we have been learning how to write a haiku poem. A haiku poem is a popular Japanese poem that traditionally has three lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables.

We took our notebooks into the playground and brainstormed words associated with an object. I chose trees because they are big, bright and colourful.

Next we came inside and composed our haiku poem using a website.

Here is mine, I hope you enjoy it.
